The African Wildlife Economy Institute (AWEI) is a think-do tank based in the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Founded in 2018, with generous support from the Oppenheimer family, the Institute became operational in mid-2021.
We aim to influence policy and practice to develop and grow an inclusive, sustainable, and thriving wildlife economy across Africa and, in so doing, enable people to live in harmony within nature. We do this through thought leadership based on research and analysis, stakeholder engagement including dialogues and participatory projects, and professional developing including postgraduate degrees by research and professional short courses.
